All right. Parents do often ask me about the practice battles. All right. Getting your student to the piano. Well, what I first want to do is I want to take the weight off of it being piano practice. Any habit that we want for ourselves or for our students takes time to build. It’s a transition from what we would naturally be doing to that new thing that we promised ourselves we would do. So, that’s kind of a getting to know yourself. And I think that as you learn music, you learn yourself. As you learn anything, you learn yourself. There’s that great great quote, how you do anything is how you do everything. But that’s not permanent, right? We can change how we do anything and everything. So the first piece, I think, is really slowing down and recognizing that your student is going to need to learn a few things about themselves before they can build this habit effectively. But one thing I know is that getting to that piano bench is going to be much easier when they aren’t experiencing confusion or overwhelm. When they know that once they sit down, the task ahead is manageable. It’s something they can do. And that’s why we always send our students home with as clear instructions and as much understanding as possible so that they are effective when they get to the bench. But we have great I suggestions as well for how to make it a full family event. Have your students practice session occur while you’re making dinner and turn off the radio, turn off the TV so that you can listen to them practice and it’s their own little performance and you cheer from the other room. Um, let your child know, I’m coming home from work and I can’t wait to hear what you were working on today. or have a little uh after TV time where the whole family sits for a concert and I’ll bet your students going to get to the piano a few times that day so that they’re prepared for the concert. Write on the mirror, I can’t wait to hear your music tonight when they’re getting ready in the morning and brushing their teeth. It’s something that has to feel meaningful to them in order for them to want to pursue it. And there’s so many simple and easy ways to do it. line up all of their stuffed animals on the piano so that they have an audience to play for. I got a million of these and I understand that it’s still not easy. One solution isn’t going to work for all students. But if we give ourselves a break and we remember this isn’t supposed to be easy. This isn’t supposed to happen automatically. that every step of this is an opportunity for my child to learn some new piece of their puzzle, their discipline, their perfectionism, their distractability, and let’s just work together as a team. And when they’re here, we’re going to continue that process right along with you. So, um, reach out. I’d love to book a call with you to talk more about Piano Lab and to talk more about um your goals for your family. And I’ll be here at Piano Lab.
